Since 2002, the project bike + business has been managed by the ADFC Hesse and the Regionalverband FrankfurtRheinMain.
The project continues to be developed by a qualified project team. This project is special for combining the interests of both employers and their employees. The focus of the project is to further a positive image of bicycles as a modern means of transport, to conceptually integrate bicycles with public transport systems, and most importantly to push cycling as a means of daily transport forward on the agenda of local and regional transport politics and plans.
Bicycles provide a modern, intergratable means of sustainable transport, that is compatible with urban life. Especially in built up areas like the Rhein-Main region, choosing to cycle alleviates pressure on the roads and results in an improvement of local public transport networks. In cities there are three main identifiable traffic elements: school traffic, commercial traffic and commuter traffic. Bike + Business works to help encourage those commuting to and from work to get onto a bike rather than into a car.
This project is formulated within the framework of the National Cycling Plan for Germany.
The National Cycling Plan lists measures for the promotion of cycling in Germany. It was created and passed in 2002 by the Bundestag. Bicycles provide a modern, intergratable means of sustainable transport, that is compatible with urban life. Especially in built up areas like the Rhein-Main region, choosing to cycle alleviates pressure on the roads and results in an improvement of local public transport networks.
An increase in the use of bicycles as a means of transport provides an unexploited, potential, resource. Compared to other means of transport, bicycle use currently covers only 12 percent in total. This percentage could feasibly, be more than doubled. Approximately half of all car journeys cover a distance that is no longer than 6 kilometres. About 60% of all bicycle trips made by bike are routine journeys, however an overwhelming majority of these consist of journeys made to and from school or university. In cities with a population of 50,000 to under 500,000, the percentage of people travelling to work by bike is currently at 12%, and respectively 6% in cities with populations of over 500,000 residents.
The National Cycling Plan was designed to cover a ten year period is available online from the German department of transport, building and urban development at
Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development.

"bike + business" was initially launched by the ADFC Hesse and continues to be developed in cooperation with them. The conceptual frame and time frame of the project were formulated in accordance with the National Bicycle Plan 2002-2012 set by government. The project aims lies specifically in the coordination of interests between employees who cycle and their employers. This coordination is achieved by propagating a positive modern image of bicycles as a means of transport, linking up bike use and public transport possibilities and most importantly increasing the numbers of cyclists on the streets, as a part local, part regional engagement with politics and planning. Support these goals and our work, become a member of the ADFC!

The planning association for the Frankfurt Rhein-Main region wants to significantly advance the use of bicycles in the region. We work within our area of remit, with cities and partners to produce a cohesive bicycle plan for the region. Regional bicycle routes hold a firm place in regional land use plans. bike + business is an important project for an increase in the use of bicycles to get to work as well as for developing the implementation of the National Bicycle Plan in the region.

We don’t see bicycles as competition for our public transport services, therefore RMV supports the project. WE see bicycles as an important contribution to eco-mobility generally. A combination of public transport and bicycle use can together create a serious alternative to private car transport. The RMV supports the use of bicycles though other projects such as "Rhine-Main-Vergnügen" ("Rhein-Main-Lesiure"), "Bike+Ride" concepts and with the provision of bike trailers on buses and "Fahrradzüge" (bike trains) at the weekends.

VSF e.V. provides the Bike+Business projects with the knowledge of its over 200 members (180 specialist dealers and 30 manufactures from the bicycle business). Since we are passionate cyclists ourselves, we offer a whole range of products and a wide range of services. A combination of bike and service is particularly important for those who are new to cycling, but would like to cycle to work. The unusual VSF bikes-for-all concept was therefore established with the thought in mind: ”you cycle and we’ll take care for the rest”. VSF specialists sell quality checked products, with guaranteed service and two years of free repairs (including flat tyres, for more: www.vsf-all-ride.de).

Cities and municipalities benefit the most from an increase in bicycle use. Here bicycles can contribute to a sustainable development of urbanity and transport. The increased use of bicycles as a means of transport to get to work is a environmentally friendly alternative to cars. It is healthier for the employee and provides financial advantages for the employers. The region Hesse supports this project. The project is under the patronage of the Minister for economy, transport and land development in Hesse, Dieter Posch.
